October 2, 1916 My beloved wife Perry, Hey, it’s me Matt. How are you doing? I know it has almost been 4 months since we saw each other, but I promise you I will be home soon. As of right now I am fighting the battle in Somme, France. The battle here in Somme is beyond brutal. It is the worst battle I have fought so far. The propaganda posters are full of lies. The battle is nothing like what they show us. There are people dying every day and it is not just a few deaths a day...it is more like hundreds. The fact that more than 57,000 casualties were made on the first day of the battle (Bradley Cruxton and Doug Wilson, July 3 2015)! That is where we sit, defend and eat all day and night. The trenches are made by us digging holes in the ground. In front of the barbed wire we dug out small trenches where we try to go into no-mans land. The deeds we make a re made very carefully. Since the goals are to defend our trench while we try taking Germans trenches at the same time. This is so we can have more land (Trench Warfare in World War One, 2015). No-mans land is an area where we can go out and battle if we wanted to but it is none of the teams land unless we take over Germans trench. As you are reading this you probably are thinking the trenches are not that bad, but trust me it is horrible. I am in the process of getting trench feet, just like everyone else here. It is a very common disease here. Which is caused by me wearing the same boots that now have holes in them and wet socks day in and day out (Spartacus Educational. Web. July 3 2015). I am hoping it doesn t become very bad that I get my leg amputated. We also get a very bad condition that is lice. The trenches are full of dust and are way too dirty. The food here that we get is stored in a room we made. The sad part is, the food gets eaten by mice crawling around the trench before we even get to eat it. Today, the next wave of developing nations like China demand more fuel for their growing populations and are competing with high-development countries for a bigger portion of the rapidly shrinking resource. The migration from a forager society to an agricultural society was a key event in the context of energy. The people at this stage in history knew using all their energy hunting and gathering prevented them from doing activities they would otherwise want to do. Eventually, though communal agriculture, they learnt to conserve their survival energy by forming a society wherein each member provided for one another. The discovery of the heat engine reinvigorated this idea. Work from human labor could be replaced with work from an exogenous source, in this instance fossil fuels. Today society continues exploit this idea to improve quality of life, mostly through transport and warmth. The easy to obtain fuels like crude oil are depleting quickly. Consequently, companies reap millions of barrels of petrol, rendering these sources unprofitable. With fossil fuels not as abundant or easy to obtain as they used to be, desperate measures in the form of Franking and Deep Sea Drilling are being used. However, these methods are costly and put unnecessary stress on the environment. Governments don’t feel obliged to intervene when the struggle for fuel is being eased. People wonder why governments are unconcerned that public funds are being spent n dangerous and costly extraction processes like franking and deep-sea drilling instead of investing it into finding a substitute. The reason is blatant: so citizens are kept happy. The world seems prosperous at this moment in history, but who knows how soon people will regret these senseless decisions. Much energy is needed to build and run the equipment, extraction devices and vehicles we need to obtain oil, natural gas and coal. Since the industrial revolution, ERROR (energy returned on energy invested) has been extremely high. This made extraction a profitable industry though as I noted previously, fuel reserves dried out and became harder to find. The world may witness an energy cliff in the near future when the amount of energy consumed during extraction actually surpasses the amount the economy gets in return. Suddenly, renewable sources by default will become the favorable option, because they are economical enough to exploit. Punk rock is the best musical style for numerous reasons. The reasons might seem simple, but the difference between punk and mainstream music is that punk is just better. But whatever the music is about, you can always be assured that it will be high energy, raw, and honest. The artists always tried to reinvent their performance to be new, and something that no one else had. Often the bands sing lyrics with a whiney and sneering vocal quality, delivering their message with twisted sarcasm and in addition, singing out of sync at times, adding to the chaotic sounds already produced by the other instruments. In reality, these kids find the true original punk ideals and ways of life just as shocking as the establishment did in the 1970s.
